Michael's  training included forestry, science and parks & recreation management. Michael chaired the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Recreation Association, was a member of the National Executive of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and responsible for the establishment of the annual Young Horticulturalist of the Year Competition, represented the amenity sector on the Board of the Horticulture Industry Training Organisation and is currently a Trustee of Highbrook Park in Manukau City.

Michael is a passionate fisherman and hunter, father of two children and particularly enjoys all Trans-Tasman sporting rivalries.
